Episode XCXX: Say Something!

New Podcast EpisodeThis one went out a bit late, I’d love to say it’s worth the wait.

It is not.

Evidently M died and her corpse filled in for her. She hardly talks. EVER. Tell her how horrible she is in the comments section.

Also congrats to the human being who made our new Halloween opening. There’s a prize for you!

Last Week to Send in Halloween Openings!

Boo

We will be accepting Halloween openings up until Friday Oct 1st. After that I’ll decide which one will be our new Halloween Opening. The rules and crap can be found here. Again not many rules, just be creative!

Even if yours isn’t picked we’ll still play it on air during the episode. Send them in before it’s too late!

Halloween Intro Details

These guys know how to rock.

I’ve gotten some emails asking for details on the Halloween opening so I thought I’d just write a post.

  • You can use whatever instruments you want. Real or software is fine.
  • You do not have to follow the established format. You can have SPEECH-QUOTE-SPEECH or just SPEECH-SPEECH or whatever. Also if you want to give the narration or have Randy say it later that’s fine.
  • Openings should be no longer than 45 seconds. Anything longer will not be used.

I didn’t want to set up any restricting rules for this, but any longer than 45 seconds is just indulgent.

That’s it! If there’s any other concerns I’ll add them to this post. Get creating!

Episode XCVI: Ejection

New Podcast EpisodeYou’re walking down a hallway. You look to your left, there’s no one there. You turn to your right and you see an envelope on top of a table. You open it only to find it full of sand. Then you wake up with stains on your crotch and bedsheets.

The question is, how do you know if you’re still dreaming? Are you dreaming now? DID I BLOW YOUR MIND!?!?!

So yeah this episode we talk about Inception (or did we? KICK). We also want lots of comments about the people you would jump into to (listen to the episodes for more info). We also answered a Canadian’s questions. Silly Canadian.

Also I’m finally opening the creation of our opening theme song to our listeners. I was going to make a new Halloween opening, but decided to give all of you a try instead. You’ve got till October 1st to send in entries, and the one we pick will be our new Halloween opening. Get your musical juices flowing! Do not fail me again Starscream.

Dr. D and WK on all Hallows Eve and Super Duper Pumpkins

This year Walrus King and I went to a great party at a friends house for Halloween. I think we called him Notorious Secret on the show, I can’t remember the episode was like 8 years ago. He’s the guy who sent in the infamous “I hate you I think you should die” quote. Anywho here’s the pics of us in our costumes. Click to ENLARGE.

As you can see WK went as a zombie while I decided to go as Indiana Jones. Granted my costume looks more like “generic Australian outback guy” but there’s only so much you can do with $20. Also we have Sir Michael in his Jedi robes, but he wears those all the time so it doesn’t count.

Also pumpkins! Texastechie sent in her pics for the pumpkin carving contest over at Halolz. She carved the awesome face and a WoW achievement. You can’t really see it in the picture but the achievement says “A Pumpkin Carver is You!” which is evidently a real achievement in the game. Great job TexasTechie!

Happy Halloween from Villainy INC!

Happy Halloween from everyone involved at Villainy INC. We hope you have a fun time trick or treating and being told your sailor moon costume is inappropriate. Also watch out for the candy with the razor blades hidden in them. Those suck. And the boogie man. That guy’s a dick.

Also be sure to send in pictures of you guys in your Halloween costumes. We’ll be sure to put them on the site!

Number 2: This is Halloween

I remember watching this scene for the first time as a child. It was unlike anything I’d ever scene before, and still stays with me as one of the best animated sequences I’ve ever scene in my life. This is Halloween establishes the tone for the rest of the movie and does a damn fine job of doing so. The scene is dark, creepy, fun, exciting, beautiful, and ugly all rolled into one cornucopia of animation. The town is clearly inspired by the works of German expressionist art movement, combined with the childhood sentimentality of Halloween. The song does an astounding job of establishing the world, and is one of the best pieces of music in Danny Elfman’s career if I do say so myself. It’s enjoyable to listen to and has a quality that I haven’t heard in a movie since. What I love most about this scene is getting introduced to all the characters. Each character is unique, each one having their own individual charm. The Mayor, the Wolfman, the guy made of goo, they’re all brilliantly designed and animated. The camera work is also fantastic, with pans and zooms not traditionally seen or attempted in stop motion. I should stop, I could go on all day with this.

Another reason I deeply respect everyone involved with this scene is the sheer number of puppets on screen at once. As I’ve said before in the podcast, I enjoy doing animation and I’m a somewhat competent stop-motion and cell animator. A general rule of thumb is the more characters you have on screen at once, the longer and harder it is to animate. Not only are all the citizens of Halloween Town present for the end of the song, they’re all constantly moving! Not to mention that if there’s a mistake on a single puppet then the whole shot has to be scrapped! How the animators kept their sanity is beyond me.

I’d also like to remind everyone to please chill out. These are just movies. It’s not a contest of whose movie is best, it’s all about sitting back and enjoying the them for what they are.

Number 3: Enter Oogie Boogie

Now that’s an entrance! Throughout the second act of the Nightmare Before Christmas there’s mention of the infamous Oogie Boogie, a Halloween creature so vile he was banished from the town. The build up to his reveal is done effectively in which we only see his shadow throughout the film, but here he’s fully revealed in one hell of a productions number.

First off the lighting is truly inspired. The “black light” effect adds a level of unease to the scene that only adds to Santa’s horrible predicament. The set design is one of my favorites in movie history. Everything in Oogie’s lair causes pain and torture, but with a Vegas gambling theme, most notably the “one armed bandits.” Oogie is disgusting and there’s not one redeeming quality to his character. I love this because he’s very easy to despise, making him a fun villain. The animation on Oogie is amazing considering his puppet isn’t as flexible as the others, and the animation work on his face is incredible.

Kudos Mr. Selick, this is one hell of a showstopper. Interesting bit of trivia, every scene where Oogie rolls the dice the result is always snake eyes.

Bonus Video! At 4:50 do you see any similarities between these two scenes? :)

Number 4: Jack Discovers Christmas Town

One of my favorite things about this scene is how they made Christmas Town the polar opposite (if you’ll pardon the pun) of Halloween Town. While Halloween Town is twisted, ugly, and scary, Christmas Town is whimsical, bright, and jolly. What makes the scene even more fun to watch is seeing how much Jack contrasts with his surroundings as he progresses through the world. The song is full of energy and infectiously catchy. Once again the animation is top notch and this scene has some of the best choreography in the entire movie. If I had to describe this sequence in only two words it would be: pure fun.

As Walrus King said, we have here the greatest scene in cinema history. I think what makes this scene classic is the killer’s face during his line delivery. Just look at him! What was he going for? Joy, insanity, rage? All three? Who knows. All I know is it’s brilliant.
